As the start of daylight savings time approaches, the LCFD would like to remind you of the helpful tradition of changing your Smoke, CO or Combination detectors battery when you set the clocks forwards in the spring and backwards in the fall. Even if your detectors are “hardwired” to your house’s power, they still contain a battery, should you lose power. Detectors should be checked monthly.

It is commonly recommended to replace the batteries in your alarms at least once a year or every six months , however you should follow the manufacturers recommendations on replacing the battery. For example some detectors come with a sealed battery which lasts the lifetime of the detector. Remember to also change the battery if the detector is “chirping”.

While you are changing the battery, check the expiration date on the detector. Detectors that are older than 10 years old should be replaced. Also make sure to dust or vacuum the detector, as dust or debris effects the detectors sensor and ability to detect Smoke/CO.
